Manchester United's Terrible Season: what went wrong?
The 2024-25 season was a disaster for Manchester United. Finishing a shocking 15th in the Premier League with just 42 points, it was their worst league campaign in decades. So, what unravelled at Old Trafford?
Coaching Chaos
Instability started in the dugout. Erik ten Hag was sacked early on, and his replacement, Rubén Amorim, couldn’t steady the ship, managing just seven wins in 27 games. This constant managerial churn crippled team performance and confidence.
Goals Disappear
United’s biggest issue was scoring. They netted a paltry 44 goals in 38 Premier League games, their lowest ever in the competition. Key attackers, including Rasmus Højlund with only four league goals, simply failed to deliver. Without goals, wins were impossible.
Old Trafford No Longer a Fortress
Their home advantage vanished. United suffered a club-record nine league defeats at Old Trafford. The Theatre of Dreams became easy pickings for visiting teams, directly contributing to their dismal league position.
Fragile Defense & Lack of Identity
While the attack struggled, the defense also conceded 54 goals. Despite moments of individual brilliance, especially from Bruno Fernandes, overall defensive solidity was absent. More broadly, the team lacked a clear identity and cohesion, appearing disjointed and inconsistent.
European Heartbreak
A small glimmer of hope came in the Europa League, where they reached the final. However, a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao meant no silverware and, crucially, no European football for next season.
The 2024-25 season was a new low for Manchester United. Managerial turmoil, a severe goal drought, a weak home record, and general disarray conspired to create a truly terrible campaign. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS face a monumental task this summer to rebuild and restore the club.
